• What is Constipation?

Constipation is more difficult to treat when the child has changes in behavior because of pain and because of soiling. Since constipation treatment is a long-term process, clearly one needs more than one player and I think that it works well when we have a team. And, the team would be the patient and the child first, and then the dietitian and the family physician.

  • Long-Term Constipation in Children

Constipation is more difficult to treat when the child has changes in behavior because of pain and because of soiling.

It does take much longer to treat. Usually, the treatment of chronic constipation takes a lifetime. For children with soiling or stool withholding, we have different treatment stages. To get them to the point that they have a more simple problem, one can cut three or four phases into management of those children.

Since constipation treatment is a long-term process, clearly one needs more than one player and I think that it works well when we have a team. And, the team would be the patient and the child first, and then the dietitian and the family physician.

There is no cure for chronic constipation. So, I think that having a team approach including the child or the patient within the team and going through the different treatment stages and empowering the family to feel free and safe in managing the plan is very important.

If you have questions about long term constipation in children, contact a local pediatrician or gastroenterologist. Often seeing a local family physician or a physiotherapist in conjunction with a registered dietitian and athletic therapist is a great option to take control of this condition. Smart Food Now and exercise is also optominal for overall health.

  • Child Constipation: Stool Withholding

tool withholding is a part of the behavior the child adapts to, trying to avoid the pain that he anticipates to come with defecation. Children may try to avoid going as much as possible by closing the buttocks, even hanging on to furniture sometimes and trying to straighten the legs to avoid the stool coming through.

There are social issues where the child that is soiling and stool withholding is not very easy to move around, to send to kindergarten, or to go visit. Those are the kind of issues that people will be concerned about; it is not a serious medical problem but it is a major family stressor.

Correcting the constipation and getting the child to move their bowels without pain is the key to reverse the whole problem. There are some good solutions once you collaborate with the family physician and of course with a dietitian who can help change the diet around.

If you have questions about stool withholding, contact your local pediatrician or gastroenterologist.
