  • Biosimilars for the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

There are certain medications known as biosimilars that are utilized for treating conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. These medications are essentially proteins that are either injected under the skin or infused through an IV. This is because they cannot be consumed orally as they would get digested. Thus, it is quite distinct from conventional medications that are used for rheumatoid arthritis.

Biosimilars are a type of medication that closely resemble the original biologics, with the same protein structure. However, due to their large molecule size, minor structural changes may occur during the manufacturing process. It is crucial to ensure that these biosimilars exhibit the same effectiveness and do not cause any additional side effects.

Biosimilars have to go through a kind of similar kind of registration process that the biologics have, so they need to go through a process where the FDA in the United States and Health Canada here looks at these medications, and appropriate studies are done to ensure that they’re as safe and effective as the original biologic.

One major benefit of biosimilars and biologics is their cost-effectiveness. Biosimilars often come at a lower price point than their original counterparts. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis can expect to receive comparable services whether they opt for biosimilars or biologics.

Those services would include access to infusion clinics if they needed infusion, some financial assistance, assistance with the pharmacy and other assisstancies they might need. In treating rheumatoid arthritis with the biosimilars, you want to make sure you check with your rheumatologist, and perhaps your pharmacist, to make sure it’s the right medication for you.Remember to verify the information provided by contacting the healthcare providers directly, as network participation and availability can vary over time. • What is Polymyalgia Rheumatica?

Polymyalgia rheumatica is a type of systemic inflammatory condition that shares similarities with rheumatoid arthritis, but also has distinct characteristics. This disorder typically affects individuals who are over the age of 60, and it is rare to see it in people under the age of 50. The onset of polymyalgia rheumatica is sudden, with pain and stiffness appearing in the shoulder and hip girdle, and gradually extending to the upper arms, thighs, and back of the legs.Symptoms of this condition typically arise within one to two weeks. Some patients report experiencing intense pain, stiffness, soreness, and difficulty with mobility within a day of onset. However, improvements are commonly observed throughout the day as patients engage in their activities of daily living, leading to a gradual reduction in symptoms.

Some symptoms may be linked to this condition as it affects the whole body. Along with musculoskeletal symptoms, constitutional symptoms may also be present. Patients often report experiencing weight loss, fatigue, and occasionally a mild fever for two to three weeks prior to the onset of musculoskeletal symptoms.
If you feel you have this condition and have symptoms that suggest the possibility that polymyalgia rheumatica may be a disorder affecting you, the most important thing is to seek medical attention with your primary care physician.

He or she will run a number of tests, as well as interview you and see whether this may be relevant to your case. Most patients with polymyalgia rheumatica will be referred to a specialist thereafter.
